What is it?

Black Hills IDPA is a sanctioned club of the International Defensive Pistol Association. IDPA was founded to test (and challenge) shooters in the concealed carry aspect.  All IDPA courses of fire and matches are real-life scenarios using practical equipment.

How easy is it to get involved?
The Black Hills IDPA invites all skill levels to try out a match this summer. Spectators are welcome.  It is best to get familiar with the IDPA rules which can be found online and shoot a classifier match.  Classifiers for the Black Hills IDPA are located in the Club calendar and shot at the Buffalo Chip Shooting Complex.

What is it like to be an IDPA shooter?
Our club level matches are a fun activity with safety at its core.  The courses of fire will be a challenge for most of the shooters, but most of all fun! Matches are scheduled with 4 to 6 courses of fire, depending on the number of registered shooters, a match could take all morning and into the afternoon. Shooters will be assisted by BH IDPA safety officers in order to make sure everyone has a good experience.

What should I bring to my first match?

Your handgun, the number of rounds as indicated in the course of fire review, a strong side holster and at atleast 3 magazines for shooters using semi-automatics, your match fees. We would appreciate an open mind and a good attitude too. There will be concessions available.  Some seating(bleachers) will be available and a lot of room for lawn chairs!

What training is available to improve my skills?
Training is practice under supervision. If you have practiced with your handgun and you're confident in your skills, then the next step is one of our Defensive Handgun Courses. This is an 8 hour handgun training that focuses on safety, technique and accuracy. More training information here.

What is a Classifier?
The classifier is a 90 round course of fire that essentially tests current skills. The class that your score falls into determines who else you'll be competing against. More info on the Black Hills IDPA Classifer.
